Some Halloween decor too gory
Dear Editor:
On this peaceful autumn morning as I was out walking, I was enjoying the beauty of colourful leaves and the homes that had begun decorating with the traditional images of Halloween. Smiling pumpkins adorned many doorsteps and giant spiders in the trees were swaying gently in the breeze.
I crossed the street to get a closer look at a large display at one home. To my dismay, I was met with a macabre scene. The ‘decorations’ seemed so unfit for a day that is generally promoted as fun for children. There were life-size clowns with ghoulish faces. One had a gruesome smile as it bent near a very life-like elderly man lying flat on his back. The man’s intestines had spilled out and were smothered in blood. Another clown was turning a spit. The object on the spit seemed to be a child with mouth and eyes wide open, all covered in blood.
I was horrified to think that this display, which took a lot of time and effort to set up, might possibly be considered entertaining.
With the wars currently being waged in our world, haven’t we been exposed to enough violence, without ‘glorifying’ it in our children’s activities?
